Community All-gates : 12-31-18

Hey Everyone!  Welcome to the "Community All-gates", the weekly feature on The Realm Gate Blog where every Monday I plan to highlight something or someone from around the Age of Sigmar and Miniature Painting Community.  It might be an Event, a YouTube Channel, Blog, Army List, Model, Hobby Project, or anything else that catches my eye.  Today I want to talk about my painting tally from 2018.  It has been a whirlwind year with tons of models crossing my painting desk, most of them Witch Aelves!  In total, I have painted 392 individual models this year.  I wasn't aiming for any specific number to paint this year, but I am happy that painting 300-400 models seem to be my yearly average over the past three years.  If you don't currently track your total models painted I really recommend you begin in 2019.  A simple tally mark in your hobby journal is all you need!

Succeeding at your 2019 Warhammer (and all) Resolutions

That magical time of year has arrived where people resolve to better themselves and make sweeping changes in the following year.  The sad truth is most New Year's Resolutions fail, but it doesn't have to be the case.  The reason most resolutions fail is usually twofold.  After the excitement and initial motivation passes people often give up on their goals and more often than not people set goals that are too grand and are more dreams than goals.  This is not to say big hobby resolutions is not possible, but you need to be smart about the goals you set and how you attack them in the coming year.  As with any piece of advice you need to look at if it works for you and be sure to share any of your advice in the comments below so we can all accomplish our 2019 resolutions!

The Hobby Table : 12-26-18

Happy Hobby Holidays one and all!  We are in the middle of the Holiday season and it has been great seeing everyone's hobby and gaming going on via Twitter and Instagram.  The recent announcement of the Glomspite Gitz has gotten a large number of people enthused and the excitement is infectious!  While I am not planning on diving into the new army I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone paint them up and get them on the table.  I plan, for now, to continue expanding my Daughters of Khaine collection and enjoying this army.  As you will see below my collection is growing quite quickly!

Community All-gates : 12-24-18

Hey Everyone!  Welcome to the "Community All-gates", the weekly feature on The Realm Gate Blog where every Monday I plan to highlight something or someone from around the Age of Sigmar and Miniature Painting Community.  It might be an Event, a YouTube Channel, Blog, Army List, Model, Hobby Project, or anything else that catches my eye.  Today I wish to point you all toward a Sigmar inspired Christmas Story I wrote last year for a bit of fun (reposted below as well).  I may not be the best writer when it comes to prose, but I hope it gives you a bit of Holiday Joy today as we all eagerly await the new Battletome reveal tomorrow!  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from me to all of you!

Opinions, FAQ's, and the Art of Growing the Age of Sigmar Community

There has been a lot of banter online lately about the game we all know and love, Age of Sigmar.  It is great to see the community being active and passionate about whatever aspect of the game they feel the most connection towards.  Some people really care about the competitive balance of the game, while others focus on keeping a strong narrative presence in the rules.  Others, like myself, find their joy and focus on having a large and positive community and the recent talks seem to split people and it can seem concerning, but we are all coming from the same perspective of growing our game.  In this madness that can be online debates and discussions, it is important to not just be a passive player and accept one person's thoughts as your own.  Listening to everyone and forming your own opinion is key to reaching the goal we are all after.  A strong and healthy community set around the game of Age of Sigmar.

The Hobby Table : 12-19-18

Happy Hobby Wednesday everyone!  The Holidays are here and I have failed spectacularly at taking time to relax and catch up on some small projects.  Instead of wrapping up the few hobby projects on my desk I managed to add a great deal more, but it isn't as bad as it seems.  While my hobby table is full and there is a small backlog I have no real commitments outside of painting a few models for Waaaghpaca next month so there is no stress to complete anything immediately.   I am also learning to not feel as if I to have built models on my painting desk and instead allow myself to build models as I feel knowing they may sit unpainted for a bit until I have the need to urge to paint them.  It is a small adjustment, but one that will allow me to focus more on my blog, YouTube channel, and soon to be released podcast as opposed to prioritizing my time painting for painting sake.

Rend 4 Winter 2018 Event Impressions

Over this past weekend, The Rend 4 Wargaming Club held their first 2-day Age of Sigmar gaming event in Ravenna Ohio.  The club has been growing over the past few years and have typically put on multiple 1-day events ever six months to coincide with their "seasons".  This year they decided to raise the bar and I can honestly say they put on such a great event that you would be hard pressed to find any issues.  The tables were well themed, the pairing was quick and well managed, and there was plenty of space to play!  I am very excited to see Neil L. and his club grow so quickly and for the event to be such a success.  I was in attendance at the event this past weekend and today I plan to run through all games and my overall impressions of the event. (Spoilers: It was a blast!)

The Hobby Table : 12-12-18

Happy Wednesday everyone!  I just came off my final Age of Sigmar event for 2018 hosted by the Rend 4 club, but there isn't much time to rest as Waaaghpaca 2019 is coming up quick.  I have begun playing with some lists for the event and even though I have the final unit of Witch Aelves all ready for painting they are going to have to wait as I will be taking a list without a single one of them due to a requirement of using movement trays on nits 20+ strong.  I don't feel Age of Sigmar needs movement trays and they can lead to poor tactical decisions in my mind its combat and not movement that can slow a game down.  With that in mind, I decided to work around the requirement with my list.  I don't fault anyone who uses movement trays and I am not upset in anyway an event is requiring them, but they are not for me and how I play the game.  The upside to this is I have really enjoyed exploring list ideas not using my typical go-to unit, but don't worry The Witch Aelf Horde isn't being shelved for long.

Explain and Share Your Hobby

I am a blessed individual in the fact that my wife loves and supports my hobbies be it Fitness or Warhammer.  However, more often than not I see comments online or directly from friends about hoping their significant other doesn't find their recent purchase or having to earn brownie points so they can attend an upcoming event.  While I am not advocating one should simply do as they please as a relationship is a two-way street, but I feel more often than not we haven't truly explained to our partners the love and passion we have for our hobby.  This seems to lead to an unhealthy idea that it is better to hide purchases or attempt to trick our partners into letting us go off to have a weekend with our friends rolling dice.  Playing Warhammer is the same as any other pursuit be it sports, cooking, fitness, etc. and no one seems to hide those from one another so why should Warhammer be the same?  As with any advice you need to really examine if it is right for you.  This is my personal experience and my situation was right for the advice I layout, but as with anything, it might not be the best for everyone.

The Hobby Table : 12-5-18

Hey Everyone!  It feels like yesterday for my last Hobby Table post as the week flew by me quickly.  A big part of why it flew by so quickly was my final preparations for this weekend's two-day event being hosted by the Rend 4 club over in Ohio.  Last night I set my army out on its display board to see how it will all layout and I was quite pleased with how full it was with 150 Witch Aelves covering almost every inch of it!  It should be some crazy games with the army and I will be sure to do a full write up of the event and my games next week.

Prepare So Your Future Self Will Thank You

Preparation is a key part of success in your life, in fitness, and in wargaming.  Taking active steps toward better preparing yourself will cause your future self to thank you and make you more successful in life and on the tabletop.  Recently, The Honest Wargamer launched their Workbook which I worked through as part of the preparation for an upcoming two-day event I am attending.  As I gave it a read through I began to feel silly for never having thought to prepare so fully for an event.  You have likely seen my article series "Life Lessons and Wargaming" that takes lessons we learn in life and how to relate it to our wargaming hobby.  Usually looking at Goals, being motivated, and developing dedication and habits to reach your goals.  I never looked at being properly prepared in for a Warhammer event before, but I plan to remedy that today.

The Hobby Table : 11-28-18

Morathi, two Hag Queens on Cauldron, one Slaughter Queen on Cauldron, one Bloodwrack Shrine, five Hag Queens on Foot, five Slaughter Queens on foot, two Bloodwrack Medusa on "foot", two Avatars of Khaine on foot, twenty Sisters of Slaughter, ten Doomfire Warlocks, five Khinerai Heartrenders, five Khinerai Lifetakers, five Melusai Blood Stalkers, five Meulsai Blood Sisters, one hundred and fifty Witch Aelves.  As of today's post that is my total Daughters of Khaine collection, but even with another thirty Witch Aelves on the way, I plan on picking up the new Battleforce being released soon.  I don't think I will ever have enough of the army, but with how much I enjoy painting and playing the army I see no reason to stop collecting them yet.  I have spent the past year building toward a true Witch Aelf Horde list and have really only played with that idea as my theme, but I plan to begin playing other styles in the coming year and building my army toward a Temple Nest List and more importantly I plan to have enough models to be able to field the "War Coven of Morathi" Mega Battalion before 2019 ends to put the proverbial cherry on top of this Sunday.  Will it be enough?

Life Lessons and Wargaming : Are you Hungry?

Hey Everyone!  After several months since the last one of these articles, I felt it was time to add another installment to my ongoing series "Life Lessons and Wargaming".  The point of this article series is to look at the little lessons we learn throughout life and how we can apply these to our Wargaming hobby.  Today the focus is on something that had awoken in me a few years back and how it has shaped my past few years in wargaming, life, fitness, and every aspect of my life.  It is less of a lesson you learn and is more of an idea you suddenly realize.  It is about being hungry.

The Hobby Table : 11-21-18

Hey Everyone!  Another week has passed and as usual, I have managed to get some good hobby time in.  While I have not been pushing myself to get anything completed I am happy with the progress I have made toward a few upcoming deadlines.  It has been all Aelves lately and a good mix of building, painting, and working to improve some areas my hobby has been lacking.  With the Thanksgiving break arriving tomorrow, I am looking forward to food, family, and getting lots of Hobby completed!

Rend 4's First 2-Day Age of Sigmar Tournament

Hey Everyone!  Today I wanted to bring you some info about the Rend 4 Club over in Ohio run by my friend Neil and the upcoming event he is planning.  Over the past few years, Neil has built up the Age of Sigmar scene in his area with his club and attracted many other clubs to participate in their gaming and hobby events.  The club has grown and their Facebook page has really become a hub of some great hobby while being a fun place to talk all things Age of Sigmar.  You have seen me attend quite a number of events hosted by Rend 4 and they have been to a fair number of my events as well, but this December the Rend 4 Club will be hosting its first ever 2-day Age of Sigmar Tournament!  Check out the details below and while this event is full there are plans to grow and it would be worth keeping your eye on it in the near future.  The upcoming 2-day event is currently sold out, but you can expect lots of pictures from the event on my Twitter as well as Neil's, so be sure to give both a follow.

The Hobby Table : 11-14-18

Hey Everyone!  It has been nice getting back into a regular hobby routine once more but as the post-event Hobby High passes I find that I have stacked up a number of projects well into the holiday season.  Usually, the gas pedal eases up over the holiday season for me, but this year that doesn't seem to be the case.  Tackling it all will be a fun challenge however and I am looking forward to accomplishing the goals and meeting the deadlines I have set for myself.  One of the bigger projects is for an event I am running for my local club over the next few months that will have me painting about 1000pts of Idoneth Deepkins o expect to see Sea Aelves over the next few months alongside the usual Daughters of Khaine.

Realms at War 2018 Impressions

Hey Everyone!  As a part of my recent trip to England, I was lucky enough to attend this year's Realms at War 3: Aethermy (aka RAW18) event held in Cambridge.  Created and run by the RAW NEO's of Jimbo, Mitzy, Ming, and Steve it is a top-level narrative Age of Sigmar event.  In short, it was RAWsome (couldn't help myself) and I have already begun looking at the possibility of making this a yearly must-attend event for my hobby schedule.  I met so many wonderful people at the event and it was a pleasure putting faces to Twitter names while throwing dice and sharing the collective story of the Aetherguild's battling for dominance.

My First Visit to Warhammer World

Hey Everyone!  Today I want to share the exciting day I had on my first trip to Warhammer World during my recent adventure to England.  Having made my pilgrimage to Warhammer Mecca I can safely say it is well worth the time, energy, and cost to visit the home of the game we love so much.  I want to give a special thanks to Mitzy (from The Mitzy and Jimbo Show) for setting up a fun day by reserving game tables and inviting friends to help make the day great, seeing people come out mid-week to play games and hang out really meant a lot.  I also want to give my thanks to the staff from Games Workshop for saying hello and having me on the Warhammer Live Stream that night for a game of Age of Sigmar.  It was a memorable day and I cannot wait to make a return trip.

Community All-gates : RAW18 Armies

Hey Everyone!  Today in my Community All-Gates post I wanted to take time and show off all the incredible armies from the Realms at War: Aethermy even that happened a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to attend.  The level of Hobby was incredible and everyone put forth their best effort and work and seeing these armies in person was inspiring to say the least.  Check out the photos below and head over to Twitter to follow the #RAW18 tag to find everyone who attended and give them a follow so you can continue to see their amazing work!

The Hobby Table : 11-2-18

Hey Everyone!  I am back in the saddle after my vacation from England these past few weeks.  Next week I plan to talk a lot about my trip across the pond, my time at Warhammer World, and my adventures at Realms at War 2018.  In short, the adventure was incredible and I am very happy I finally went over to the Warhammer Mecca and I suggest everyone try to do so at least once in their hobby life. Today I want to get you all caught up on the hobby I was working on right before I left for England.  It might be a bit of a short post today as I ease back into my Blogging grove, but you can expect some extensive post next week.

Guest Article : All Hallows Siege with Paul Wagner

Hello all, my name is Paul Wagner (better known as Pjschard) and I will be writing a few posts while Chuck is off on his exciting British adventures.  I play Age of Sigmar, am part of the Mortal Realms Podcast, and in general am a proud AoS superfan.  This last Saturday I attended an awesome narrative event right here in Madison, Wisconsin.  It was run by the Milwaukee and Madison crew and named “All Hallow’s Siege.”

Guest Article : Paul Wagner's Hobby Motivation

Hello all, my name is Paul Wagner (better known as Pjschard) and I will be writing a few posts while Chuck is off on his exciting British adventures.  I play Age of Sigmar, am part of the Mortal Realms Podcast, and in general am a proud AoS superfan.  When I start thinking of an army I have to find some niche that makes the army cool in my mind.  Whether it be an army list, models, or conversions, I get excited about armies that I can make mine.   If the army fulfills all three motivations I typically go bonkers with my budget to find exactly what will work regardless of how expensive *cough* Forgeworld War Mammoth *cough* or ridiculous *cough* Eleven Arachnaroks *cough* it might be.

Guest Article : Matt Hayward's War Against the Grey

Hello, Realmgaters!  I will be filling in today for Chuck during his infiltration and inevitable assault on the Mortal Realm of Britain.  My name is Matt, one of Chuck's closest friends and confidants.  Chuck mentions me somewhat frequently so I might sound familiar to the engaged reader.  I've been playing Warhammer for a little over a decade.  I got started in 40k, tried to play Fantasy, dabbled in Middle Earth, and I picked up AoS from Day 1 (which is now my game of choice, in no small part because of Chuck).

Guest Article : Paul Wagner's Journey to Becoming Stormcast Strong

Hello all, my name is Paul Wagner (better known as Pjschard) and I will be writing a few posts while Chuck is off on his exciting British adventures.  I play Age of Sigmar, am part of the Mortal Realms Podcast, and in general am a proud AoS superfan.

This post is going to be about getting Stormcast Strong, but not the kind you’re used to. This post is not about the muscle-bound Pennsylvanian Adonis that is Chuck. This will be about the fat, old, Dad-body that is Paul.  You see, I just started on my Stormcast Strong journey a month ago.  I joined a gym, or rather, I joined a babysitting service with 2.5 free hours every day, and it just so happens I can’t leave the gym while they’re being watched so I might as well work out.

Teclis : Wisdom of The Light

Teclis, brother of Tyrion, High Loremaster of Hoeth, descendent of Aenarion, Warden of The White Tower, and recently God of Light.  Teclis has been a divisive character over his long history, but without question, he is one of the most important beings who shaped many major events in The World That Was.  There is no doubt as we venture more into Hysh we will see Teclis playing a major part in The Mortal Realms as well.  His story is always closely connected to his brother Tyrion and even during The End Times when Teclis followed his own Agenda and had to oppose his kin but his loyalty and love remained.  Teclis always played the long game that most could not or choose not to see and this more than anything else would make others see him as distant and cold.  This would make Teclis a lonely figure as we examine his past and who he was in The World That Was.  He was burdened with destiny and gifted with hope and without Teclis the lore we all love would never have happened.

The Hobby Table : 10-17-18

UPDATE:  I had a few generous people reach out to me and offer to be guest writers for the days I am away so you can now expect regular posts while I am away on the usual Mon, Wed, Fri schedule.  Big thanks to Matt and Paul for helping me out!

Hey Everyone!  Before I dive into what has been on my Hobby Table for the past week I want to make a small announcement.  As you are already aware I will be vacationing to England with my wife next week for some sightseeing, some Warhammer, and seeing some great friends.  Due to the trip, I will be taking a short break from my regular blogging schedule.  My last post before I leave will me my Community All-Gates on 10/22 and you won't see another blog post until I return with a  Hobby Table on 10/31.  Taking a break has been a tough decision as I have been very consistent and didn't want to break the streak.  Looking back I don't believe I missed a post or took a few days off for about two years or so and I am very proud of that fact.  However, I want to focus on the trip, take lots of pictures, and enjoy my time as opposed to making sure I get another post out.  I don't want to leave you all hanging while I am away so this Friday you can expect another Character History post where I dive deep into Teclis, who he was, who he is, and his efforts to save everything time and time again.

What is Your Favorite Narrative Twist?

Everyone loves a good story and the Warhammer Universe contains some of the best one could find.  As we collect, build, and paint out models we are also getting invested in the lore.  Once you find a faction that you connect with it is very easy to begin diving deeper and deeper into that factions history, stories, and heroes to help you build your armies narrative.  Warhammer Fantasy Battles had decades of lore built up through the years and Age of Sigmar has been going from strength to strength with each new releases and novel.   As more and more lore is released it is inevitable that some twists to the story will happen.  Some are small and add a different bit of flavor and other twists can you know to its very core.  Today I want to talk about my favorite plot twist that hit me so hard it has shaped my views of armies into The Age of Sigmar and changed everything I knew about my original Warhammer love, The Asur

The Hobby Table : 10-10-18

Hey Everyone!  Despite the fact that my local area has continued to be in the 80°F/26°C we are finally into Autumn and as such, I decided to have a bit of fun with my favorite art piece from the Daughters of Khaine Battletome.  Normally this time of year is the best time to prep your hobby for the coming winter months with building and priming (if you use a rattle can) but I am hoping November will be more agreeable.  If you live in the Northeast U.S. like me I hope your weather finally begins to cool and the humidity levels finally begin to drop.

The Unrequited of the Tayrathian

Hey Everyone!  Today, as promised on my post from Wednesday today I will be sharing the lore behind my Aethermyst and the army I am taking to Realms at War.  The general lore of my Army, since its conception, has been focused around the idea of a cult that was very heavy int he Witch Aelf culture and I always tend to play with lots of Witch Aelves as the core of my force.  As a fun nod to some of my music preferences, I created a mythical founder for the cult in the form of Tayrathi Swiftheart.  After working with Morathi to found the Tayrathian Cult she disappeared in some unknown way and is believed to be dead by the cult she founded.  The tale of my Aethermyst is the possible rebirth of Tayrathi and her quest to now usurp Morathi and resurrect Khaine.

The Hobby Table : 10-3-18

Hey Everyone!  While we have sightings of Slaanesh and Orktober is kicking into high gear I am staying committed to my path of preparing for Realms at War first and foremost.  It's been a challenge to not begin painting my Daemonettes if I am honest, but I am holding strong (for now)!  Over the past week, I have finished painting my Aethermyst and Aetherlab, Finalized my lists, and got a practice game in.  The only things left on my plate are writing a bit of lore and getting my costume together which should hopefully go smoothly in the coming weeks.

The Road to Realms at War 2018

Hey Everyone!  As you know, because I keep talking about it, Realms at War is fast approaching and I am happy to be attending on my first trip over to England.  You are probably also aware that my hobby as of late has been very relaxed and a bit all over the place.  It has been nice to just let my hobby move to whatever my mood decides, but with only a month left I began dedicating time to get my Aethermyst, Aetherlab, and Potato completed.  I am happily on my way, but as I painted up those few models I felt my drive kicking into a higher gear and I am now fully focused on the upcoming event and I am putting my full effort into preparing for the big show!

The Hobby Table : 9-26-18

Only 26 days until my wife and I head to London to visit an exciting new place, visit friends, and play some Warhammer Age of Sigmar.  When we pulled the trigger and planned the trip so long ago we kept out excitement tempered, but now that we are within a month it is hard to hide our enthusiasm for the fun vacation that is almost here.  While over there visiting I will be playing in the Realms at War Event as well as a trip to Warhammer World so you can expect coverage of the event as well as our travels.  Until then it will be all about preparing for the trip and event.

Community All-gates : 9-24-18

Hey Everyone!  Welcome to the "Community All-gates", the weekly feature on The Realm Gate Blog where every Monday I plan to highlight something or someone from around the Age of Sigmar and Miniature Painting Community.  It might be an Event, a YouTube Channel, Blog, Army List, Model, Hobby Project, or anything else that catches my eye.  Twitter was buzzing this past weekend with reports and fun from the FaceHammer GT.  Easily one of the top events over in the U.K. the community playing really put out a lot of fun and gaming for us to enjoy via their feeds.  You can check it all out on Twitter by searching the tag #FHGT2018 and looking at the FaceHammer Twitter.

The Realm Gate Blog : CHANGE INBOUND

Hey Everyone!  Today I wanted to talk a bit about my plans for the future of the blog and some of my goals going forward.  It has been a fulfilling journey so far with the blog and it is always fun to look back at my first posts and see how everything evolved over time.  I have no intentions of stopping the blog, but I have become comfortable with the routine and I am not one to sit around being comfortable and prefer to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and constantly pushing myself.  Some changes might seem small and you won't even notice them that much, but I have a few ideas I am considering for more drastic changes, specifically bringing the blog more in line with my Strength Hammer YouTube Channel and website.

The Hobby Table : 9-19-18

Happy Wednesday everyone!  The hobby has been picking up steam as we head into Autumn, despite the ongoing summer weather that is hanging around preventing me from some priming.  This past week I have managed to get a lot built, play a game, and finally get to work on my Realms at War project.  On top of all that I have been bitten by the Warhammer Champions bug after picking up a few booster packs and the Order Starter Deck at NOVA a few weeks back.  While none of my local shops have begun stocking the game I have been playing a lot of games via the App on my phone.  The game is really fun and unique and I am hoping to get the game going in my area soon.

Community All-gates : 9-17-18

Hey Everyone!  Welcome to the "Community All-gates", the weekly feature on The Realm Gate Blog where every Monday I plan to highlight something or someone from around the Age of Sigmar and Miniature Painting Community.  It might be an Event, a YouTube Channel, Blog, Army List, Model, Hobby Project, or anything else that catches my eye.  Today I want to the upcoming Armies on Parade.  The event happens every year at official Games Workshop and Warhammer Stores across the world.  It is great motivation to get an army painted and get a bit creative with a nice Display Board for your force.  I highly recommend you join up if you have one happening in your area.

Age of Sigmar Army Concept : The Ether-Void Covenant

The Mortal Realms are terrifying and wondrous places full of all manner of beings fighting it out in The Age of Sigmar.  Humans, Aelves, Orruk, Duardin, Undead, Daemons, and gods are all fighting over souls and the power they bring to their perspective goals.  Some factions work to bind The Mortal Realms together more tightly while others are trying to rip them apart as they spin through the ether of raw magic.  The races worship one god or another and are promised rebirth, damnation, or possible a heaven of sorts.  Let's explore the idea that there are beings across the races who might not be keen on any of these promises and when their mortal life is over, wish for nothingness above other godly promises.  Today I want to examine a "shower thought" I had recently about a new faction for Age of Sigmar who follow the Ether-void and the nothingness it promises to one's soul and what an army for that faction might look like.

The Hobby Table : 9-12-18

Happy Wednesday everyone.  If you recall last weeks Hobby Table you will know I have a few small projects sitting on my hobby table for a local league, Armies on Parade, and Realms at War.  Thankfully these are all small projects without much urgency to get them completed in a hasty fashion.  Sadly, the lack of immediate need to complete these projects means I haven't done much more than look at them over the past week while thinking to myself "I should start these".  What I have managed over the past week is adding a few more projects of little urgency to my hobby table and do a bit of housekeeping with some swag from NOVA.  It is not exciting, but I can assure you there will be a flurry of activity coming soon as the events begin to draw close.
